Getting rid of smells from an air conditioner isn't hard. With these simple steps, you can track down the cause of the odors, remove it, and enjoy your air conditioner again. This usually means that the drain holes are clogged, which causes water to collect where it shouldn't. In a short time, it becomes stagnant and smelly. Don't use anything sharp or metal though.

If you don't want to go through the expense of having a special system installed to combat the odor problem, there are several chemical solutions. Some of the chemicals are good for short or long-term use. Lysol is the most common product that is used to kill the microorganisms growing in the evaporator. The draw back is that that it does wash off and has to be reapplied every few days.
One is to keep a spray can of Lysol in the car and spray it into the air intake one a week. That will keep the problem under control. Another is to shut the air conditioning off about a mile or so before you get to where you're going and allow the evaporator to dry out.
