How to Get Rid of Hiccups?

Breathing is an intrinsic thing which your body does without you knowing it. The brain sends messages along the phrenic nerve to the diaphragm. The muscle contracts, which makes your lungs fill with the air that comes into your body through your mouth or nose. Following are the ways to get rid of the ailment called Hiccup:

  1. Repeated swallowing works for mild cases. Do this by holding your breath and repeatedly swallowing as fast as you can, or by slowly drinking down a beverage with as many swallows as is possible. It’s important that you hold your breath for as many gulps as you can. Placing a napkin over a glass of water canl help moderate your speed.
  2. Plug your nose and ears then swallow 20 times as fast as possible.
  3. Quawk like a chicken while flapping your arms and bobbing your head as if you were pecking at something.
  4. Laugh. Think of something funny and the hiccups will be gone.
  5. Take a shot of lemon juice. Let a teaspoon of sugar dissolve under your tongue.
  6. Think of the ugliest person you’ve ever seen. Now picture them naked, rolling naked down a hill or riding a bike.
  7. Eat some pickles.

Hiccups and how to get rid of them?

  • If hiccups are very severe, you can try a spoonful of sugar or hold your breath as long as possible.
  • Breathe quickly (hyperventilation) to get rid of hiccups. Again, the same principal of breathing disruption seen in the above steps is applied here. Hyperventilating into a paper (never plastic) bag may help you to focus on the breathing enough to stop your hiccups.
  • Swallow a teaspoonful of dry sugar to get rid of hiccups.
  • If your hiccups last for longer than 24 hours (or 3 hours in the case of small children), they could be the symptom of a more serious medical condition and you should see a doctor.
  • Hiccups are in your head, but because you may be slightly inebriated, your concentration may be a little dulled. That’s why the breathing needs to be incorporated. Plus, you’re already drunk, so you probably won’t look all that silly by doing this anyway.
  • Get a paper bag and blow it up slowly. Breathe into and out of the  paper bag so that you don’t get fresh air for half a minute or so.  If that doesn’t work, someone might burst it with a bang when  you are not expecting it.
  • Drink water from the ‘wrong’ side of  the cup so that your mouth is facing
down and you have to really oncentrate, or wet yourself.
  • Cardamom with honey also helps in getting rid of hiccups.
  • If the period for hiccups is prolonged consult a doctor.
